King Ludwig's Castles

This little bakery has served us well this past week.  Tomorrow we will make our final stop as we head out of town for Switzerland.  It was difficult to make our decisions but we managed.
Mmmmm..... a croissant with chocolate on the inside.  I couldn't start my day any better than that!

It was a cool, rainy day, the first of fair weather we've had since our arrival so we embraced it and headed to the castles of King Ludwig II.  These fairy tale castles are the girls' dream home.

King Ludwig II
The first was a palace he had built not for show but simply to live in.  The Palace of Linderhof.  He lived here for eight years.  We were not able to take video or pictures inside.  The rooms were extremely ornate with wood carvings that were plated in gold. King Ludwig II was the eldest son of King Maximillian of Bavaria.  The cathedral I took pictures of yesterday had a couple large statues of Maximillian built into the front.  I love it when information builds like that!  Ludwig loved architecture and designed his own castles based on some that he had seen in France.  He also enjoyed the operas written by Richard Wagner and huge scenes of these operas were painted all through the castle.

He was also known as The Mad King Ludwig.  One of his other castles is Neuschwanstein.  It is the castle that inspired Walt Disney.  It took them  about 17 years to build it and he lived in it for only 172 days.  He was declared mad by his psychiatrist and the next day they were both found mysteriously dead in the lake.  He was only 40 years old.

We walked to it from here, yep we sure did.  There was a lovely horse carriage taking people up for nine bucks each!  We opted for the 40 minute walk and beat the horse carriage!  Ahhh, such satisfaction.

  3. Thanks for sharing such an incredible journey Rash family! What an awesome learning experience for you all! Bly, I hope you get this blog bound as a book of your trip when you get back...you ARE coming back, right??? ;) Steve visited some dear friends in Langen a few years back and was amazed at how little they refrigerate and how often they went to the store. He also told me to tell you if you eat pizza, don't ask for pepperoni, it's not like ours! (He had heartburn for 3 days!)
