Visiting Bern and Murten

Beautiful flowers around every corner.  Karin and Rahel do an amazing job keeping everything weeded and trimmed back.  I have a huge appreciation for the time it takes to maintain flower beds.  I can't even imagine what mine must look like now.  Oh well, it will be covered with snow by the time we get home and I will deal with it in the spring.

We had plans to go hiking in the mountains today but the rain moved in a day early so we went to Bern instead.  Bern is the capitol of Switzerland.

Saturday morning they have a farmers market.  Blocks and blocks of fruit, meat, flowers, cheese, you name it they had it.  It was quite spectacular to see. Everything was very expensive.  We bought five bananas the equivalent of seven dollars.  Good thing Daddy packed a lunch fit for princesses.
The girls needed to go to the bathroom so we walked all over looking for a public restroom but couldn't find one.  We were pleased to stumble on a McDonald's, it was jam packed with people.  When we got upstairs to the bathroom it was locked and there was a keypad that you had to type in a code off of your receipt.  Good thing it was busy, we just slipped in when someone came out.  What is it with the Europeans and their bathrooms?

If we stayed in Switzerland much longer than a week we'd end up sitting next to this guy.  The city is fun for awhile but we needed something different.  We got back in the car and headed on down the road to Murten.
Walking through the entrance of the city gates
Murton is a walled  medieval town that dates back to the year 515.  After a fire in the 1400's the stone was rebuilt.  We were able to climb the ramparts to the top of the city walls and walk along the ring as we looked across the roof tops.
Walk-way to get to ramparts.

It was a cool day that turned quite rainy on the way home. When we arrived at the door way of our apartment a warm loaf of homemade bread awaited us.  We consumed it within minutes.  Thanks Rahel.  Tomorrow we will go to a Mennonite service with Karin.  Looking quite forward to it.  Their special music this week is a Swiss yodeling choir.  I hope the girls and I don't get the giggles.

  1. I am thinking of making my own scrapbook of your trip. Your photos are stunning, and unique and really fun. 3 postings in one day. That's amazing. We should look at Beatrice the way you look at each new place. What hidden treasures wait to be discovered with a fresh perspective? Okay, no mountains or towns dating back to the year 515... but there is beauty all around us. Love you.

  2. Mary, you are so funny. I will come back with a fresh perspective of our town and do better job of documenting our life in general. I agree there is beauty everywhere and in the strangest of places.
