Dennis has been dreaming of visiting Wengen, a city that sits on a shelf of a mountain for ten years. Today he got to check it off his list bucket list.
.
We drove to Lauterbrunnen and hopped a cog train to Wengen. The girls' first train experience!
It chugged up the mountain serving spectacular views of the Jung Frau and Eiger mountains. Our little city on a shelf was much different than we had expected. We hiked around the paved roads awhile but it was a bit dull so we decided to move on from this greatly anticipated destination.
Moments later the loud clanking of cow bells and hoof steps filled our ears. We began to run towards the sound in fear of missing something. The boredom of the town was swept away by decorated cows hooving down the winding streets of Wengen. They were being brought down from the Alps until next spring. The weather is getting cool and they have eaten all the grass so they have a ceremony to bring them down. Every cow with a huge bell on their neck and some with flowered head dress. I couldn't take the eye candy in fast enough. In the middle and end of the herd were men with walking sticks to keep the cows in line. They had mugs with beer sloshing out and they hooted and hollered on the way down the mountain.
Feeling refreshed in the excitement we decide to plop down on a patch of grass for our picnic lunch and hope for another passing.
The Jung Frau and Eiger Mountains in the backdrop were beautiful. It was a bit cloudy so seeing the top was hit and miss as the clouds hung over the top of them. Litte did we know that when we went to the next town of Grindelwald we could almost reach out and touch them.
Part 2 of day Sept 20 to follow.
God will not disappoint
